Hydropower in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has significant hydropower potential with an estimated total usable capacity of 45,000 MW. However, less than 5% of this potential is utilized to date. Along with investments in wind and geothermal potentials, the Government of Ethiopia is committed to increase the hydropower capacity of the country in the coming five years from 2,000 MW to 10,000 MW – a five-fold increase. This demands a major mobilization of financial investment and human resources. To achieve this goal, to the benefit of the country and the East African region, an unprecedented collaboration of all stakeholders is required. Adopting international good practices in solving project implementation challenges, risks and environmental and social impacts have paramount significance for the successful accomplishment of the target. This will require resources, knowledge and good practices from around the world.
